Editorial Design: Twenty Years on Deadline
Before brand strategy, I built a practice across two decades in national print media, on the discipline a daily newspaper demands: strong hierarchy, disciplined typography, and finished pages delivered on time, to spec, every day.
At the National Post, as Features Presentation Editor, I led the art direction and design of specialized print presentations, weekend sections and the Avenue Page, developing dynamic visual features and infographics that gave complex stories a clear point of entry. The work earned two silver medals and five awards of excellence from the Society of News Design.
At The Globe and Mail, as Design Editor, I led the art direction of news, features and special reports — partnering daily with photographers, illustrators, editors and production staff to shape how each story was seen as well as read. The role earned the Directions Award in Art Direction for a newspaper page or spread from the Advertising & Design Club of Canada.
At Fairfax Media as an editorial designer, I created layouts for the news, sport, business and features sections of The Age (Melbourne) and The Sydney Morning Herald — through a period of intense technology-driven change for Australia’s publishing industry. The work was recognized with a Quill Award for Best Graphic from the Melbourne Press Club, and Best Mobile Site/App at the PANPA Newspaper of the Year Awards.
